Don’t Let the Dust Settle

Winston-Salem Woman Dusting a ShelfKeeping your Winston-Salem home dust-free can be a challenge and even a nuisance. This is specifically true due to the fact that many types of dusters move dust around rather than trapping and eliminating it. Not only does this waste your time, but it also wastes your money! If you want to be able to dust successfully, you must have the appropriate tools for the job. To make certain you’re getting the best value for your money, take a closer look at the various types of dusters you can buy and which ones work best for your dustiest jobs.

Feather Dusters

Although they may look impressive, feather dusters aren’t actually just for the rich and fancy. Instead, they make a durable, all-purpose duster that can work effectively on a lot of your dustiest areas. But it is vital to select the appropriate kind. The only feathers that attract dust are ostrich down feathers. Ostrich down feathers are thick and soft and excellently capture dust. Although they can be on the rather expensive side, feather dusters made of other types of feathers or synthetic materials won’t work at all. Rather, these cheap feather dusters will just flick dust around the room where it will settle once again on your furniture even only minutes later.

Wool Dusters

Another natural material that works absolutely great as a duster is wool. Wool dusters attract and collect dust with static and natural lanolin in the fibers. Wool is also very soft, making it an excellent material for dusting fine surfaces or those that scratch easily. While wool dusters are not as common as other types of dusters and may be scarcely found in stores, they are widely available online.

Microfiber Dusters

One of the more low-cost types of dusters that still work effectively is microfiber dusters. These dusters come in a range of sizes and styles, but they all effectively accomplish the same task: removing dust. Microfiber works so well because it is made of tiny filaments that rub together, creating static electricity. This static attracts dust, making dust removal light and breezy. Microfiber is also washable and reusable, making it one of the most economically-friendly dusters around.

There are a lot of different styles of microfiber dusters. Some are straightforward hand dusters, with an easy-grip handle that lets you maneuver the duster in and out of corners and across high shelves. Several of these also do come with extendable handles to really help you reach the tops of door frames and photo frames. One of the more creative styles of duster is one created specifically for window blinds. Created with three prongs, this microfiber duster glides between the slats and grabs dust on both sides with every swipe. Another innovative option is the dusting mitt. Designed much like an oven mitt, but with microfiber material, you slip the mitt over your hand and wipe down your surfaces.

Disposable Dusters

One popular type of duster is disposable dusting pads. These dusters are made from tiny polyester fibers and rely on static electricity to effectively attract and take out dust. Both name brand and generic brand dusting pads work in the same manner and most often come in either dusting kits with a reusable handle or packs of refill pads. Many people love these dusters because you use them until they are visibly dirty and then throw the pad away.

Compressed Air

On a final note, if you need to dust delicate electronic devices or small crevices, one excellent duster you can put to use is compressed air. Compress air comes in cans that you can spray directly onto the area to be dusted, allowing you to blow the dust out safely. You can therefore follow up with one of the other types of dusters to remove anything that remains on the item’s surface.
